Ooxor Aweeshko: Raising Free Spirits, One Family at a Time!

Chayo's Story:

Chayo is a Zapoteca mother of 3 on Tongva Lands, and is the people steward at School for the Ecocene. She is the creator of a world where education feels less like a cage and more like a vibrant tapestry, woven with ancestral wisdom and the joyful exploration of little minds. She is co-founder of Ooxor Aweeshko Community School after embarking on a decolonizing journey in 2018 to recognize that true freedom starts with raising children who aren't afraid to think and do.

Ooxor Aweeshko: More Than Just School is a family circle, not a classroom. Currently, 5 families form the core, but their impact extends far wider, touching over 150 people through workshops, support groups, and events. Here, BIPOC families can ditch the guilt and embrace "unschooling" – a way of learning that centers around curiosity, not control. Chayo is also a Reiki Master. Since 2011, she's practiced the art of energy healing, weaving her intuitive gifts and ancestral traditions into a unique practice. Inspired by her grandmother, a healer of children's ailments, Chayo creates a personalized healing space for each person. She believes that true healing starts with connecting to our "Godly selves," and she shares this gift through distant healing and in-person sessions.
